Our History
The roots
of the Winnetka Youth Organization extend
back to 1966, when there was widespread adult misunderstanding and
concern
about the changing behaviors of young people.
At that time, the Tri-Church Council, which consisted of ministers and
lay members of the Congregational, Christ, and Presbyterian Churches,
worked to
provide constructive recreational programs for youth, which was the
original
focus of the WYO. It soon became
apparent, however, that recreation alone would not meet the needs of
many of
the young people, and that WYO services would need to be expanded to
help them
through adolescence.
In 1969, the informal group of Winnetka Citizens
known as the Winnetka Youth Recreation Committee was incorporated as
the
Winnetka Youth Organization, a not-for-profit charity
organization. Although the WYO is not affiliated with any
particular religious group, the Churches continue to support us because
of the positive alternatives we provide for local teens.
For over 40 years, the
WYO has provided a variety of
recreational and service-oriented programming in an informal gathering
place
where teens can find
support as they develop their individual identities. For
many teens, one of the biggest problems they face, at home and at
school, is
the feeling that no one understands them. The WYO provides a place where
they express their
individuality in an
accepting environment, and where they can develop meaningful
relationships with
peers and adult mentors.When
more
serious problems arise, the staff at WYO works with parents and within
our
support network of trained professionals to refer young people to the
appropriate community agencies.
Additionally,
the WYO has historically functioned as
a safe alternative to the dangerous and destructive activities in which
many
teens participate. In the 2006 NTHS
Youth Risk Behavior Survey, it was reported that 27% of NTHS students
engage in
binge drinking; this is 1.5% higher than the national
average. Even more disturbingly, 46% of seniors and
37% of juniors reported engaging in binge drinking within the last 30
days. This report clearly shows the
continuing need for a safe alternative in the community. The
WYO offers monthly, substance-free,
all-ages concerts, as well as regular after-school and weekend hours,
making us
the obvious solution for teens who want to make healthy choices.
